Job Introduction
Voluntary Independent Person - Gosport Borough Council
Gosport Borough Council is seeking an impartial and community-minded individual to join its Audit and Standards Sub Board as an Independent Person.
This important voluntary role provides an opportunity to support local democracy and help promote the highest standards of conduct among the Council’s elected and co-opted members. You will offer an independent perspective on Code of Conduct complaints, providing advice before decisions are made about investigations, local resolutions and investigated allegations. You may also be consulted by elected members who are the subject of a complaint.
As an Independent Person, you will work alongside the Monitoring Officer, Democratic Services Officer and members of the Audit and Standards Sub Board. You will develop an understanding of the Council’s ethical framework, attend relevant meetings and training, and act as an advocate for integrity, accountability, openness and ethical behaviour in public life.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for someone with a genuine interest in local issues, public service and maintaining high standards. You will need to demonstrate integrity, sound judgement and the ability to remain objective, independent and impartial. You should also be a confident communicator who understands the importance of confidentiality and can consider sensitive and sometimes complex matters fairly.
Experience of local government, public service, complex organisations, complaints processes or judicial and quasi-judicial matters would be helpful, but is not essential. Training will be provided to help you develop the knowledge and skills required for the role.
If you are committed to fairness, ethical decision-making and serving the local community, we would be pleased to hear from you.
Why volunteer with us?
This is a rewarding opportunity to use your skills and experience to contribute to good governance and help maintain public confidence in the standards expected of those holding public office in Gosport.
The Council's arrangements for handling conduct complaints are made in accordance with the requirements of the Localism Act 2011, which requires the Council to appoint at least one Independent Person to support it in carrying out these responsibilities
